Hawks compete at Cadet and Junior Nationals

In July, Coach Hill and several members of the Hawks traveled to Fargo, North Dakota with the Virginia National Team to compete at the 2005 Cadet and Junior Freestyle and Greco Nationals.  The Cadet and Junior National Championships is known to be the largest wrestling tournament, and toughest high school tournament in the world!  Up to 4,500 wrestlers from 49 different states competed at the event.  Sophomore Steven Ours, and seniors Mike Muenster, Jonahan Romero, and Calvin Cardillo all represented the the MatHawks and Team Virginia.

Ours competed at 145 lbs for Team Virginia.  In greco competition, ours finished with a record of 1 win and 2 loses.  In freestyle, Ours won his first three matches, defeating opponents from Nevada, Colorado, and Arizona.  Ours dropped his last two matches to eventual all-americans from Florida, and Washington.  Ours finished the event with an overall record of 4 wins and 4 loses in freestyle and greco.

Mike Muenster competed at the 119 lbs weight class in the Junior division.  In greco competition, Muenster had one win and two defeats.  Muenster's win came by an 11-6 decision over Jubran Nasser of Michigan.  In freestyle, Muenster finished with zero wins and 2 defeats.

Jonahan Romero competed at the 135 lbs weight class in the Junior Division.  Romero finished greco competition with one win and two defeats and was unable to compete in freestyle due to a knee injury suffered during greco.

Calvin Cardillo competed at 189 lbs in the Junior division. Cardillo finished with one win and two defeats in both freestyle and greco competition.  Cardillos wins came over opponents from Missouri and Arizona.

Great job to all the MatHawks who competed in this event.  The fall season is underway with the Gunston Wrestling Club.  Practice is held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.  Fall tournaments will kick off in September.  Visit http://members.cox.net/gunstonwc/ to get the latest news for the fall season.
