2005-2006 Season Review

The 2006 edition of the MatHawks entered the season with high expectations and a sense of purpose due to the fact that in 2005, Hayfield did not win the Patriot District title for the first time in this decade.  Although, the team rallied to place 2nd in the 2005 Northern Region Tourney, the MatHawks felt that they underachieved.  Read more...

Cardillo to Virginia, Romero to Memphis

Seniors Calvin Cardillo, and Jonahan Romero have both recieved athletic scholarships to attend college.  Romero signed to play soccer for the University of Memphis; while, Cardillo will wrestle for the University of Virginia.  Congratulations to both!

Cardillo Wins State Championship

Senior Calvin Cardillo won the 189 lbs Virginia AAA State Championship with a 9-1 major decision over Justin Hoover of Ocean Lakes.  More to come soon....

Cardillo Featured in Examiner Newspaper

MatHawks Claim 6th Northern Region Title in 8 Years

MatHawks claimed its sixth Northern Region title in eight years after Senior 189 lbr Calvin Cardillo pinned Washington & Lee's Russel Dawson in 1:18 in the championship match.  6 Hawks qualified for the state tournament.  More to come soon...

2006 PATRIOT DISTRICT CHAMPIONS

The MatHawks claimed their 6th District title in the last 7 years.  Also claiming district crowns were Seniors Allan Kwong at 103 lbs, Jonahan Romero at 135 lbs, Sophomore Stephen Ours at 152 lbs, and Senior Calvin Cardillo at 189 lbs.  13 of 14 Hawks qualified for the Northern Region Championships held at Centreville HS.

Hawks dominate LB and Yorktown

The MatHawks finished district competition defeating LB on Wednesday night.  The MatHawks went 7-0 in district competition and will complete the regular season next Thursday against Langley.

MatHawks down WS, Lee, and WP

MatHawks improved to 5-0 in district competition with wins over West Springfield, Lee, and West Potomac over the weekend.

MatHawks Finish 3rd at Hawk Duals

Hayfield finished in 3rd place at the Hawk Invitational Duals held at Hanover High School in Mechanicsvilled, VA.

Schumack 1st at Cliff Keen Reno Nationals

Freshman Shane Schumack traveled to Reno, NV for the Cliff Keen Reno Nationals on Dec 3-4, 2005.  Shane took 1st Place in the 15&U Division, 145 lb weight class.  He wrestled 4 matches.  He beat a tough NJ wrestler in the finals 1-0.  Participants from VA, CA, CO, NJ, NV, and WA state were represented in his weight class.

MatHawks to Compete at Top National Events

Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.I.N.), in its November 15, 2005 edition lists its "top national high school events in 2005-06."  The MatHawks 2005-2006 schedule will feature three of the events listed.

Alumni News

Carlos Palacios, who wrestled for the MatHawks 1999-2002, is currently wrestling at West Liberty State College in West Virginia.  Carlos is slated to start the season at 141 lbs for the Hilltoppers is currently ranked 3rd in the Eastern Region.

Floyd Wright, a state champion for the MatHawks in 2001, is having an outstanding season for the Marshall University (WV) football team.  This past weekend Floyd recorded a sack and 4 tackles to help Marshall to a 27-26 win over Tulane.

Hawks Compete at Cadet and Junior Nationals

In July, Coach Hill and several members of the Hawks traveled to Fargo, North Dakota with the Virginia National Team to compete at the 2005 Cadet and Junior Freestyle and Greco Nationals.  Read more...
