2005-2006 Season Outlook

October 11, 2005

Members of the Hayfield wrestling team have been working arduously this fall in preparing for the upcoming season. Coach Villanueva has had his charges lifting and running every day after school since school started. Several talented freshmen have joined the program this year and are also working diligently for the upcoming season.

The MatHawks have high expectations for the upcoming season. The team has an intriguing mixture of proven veterans and talented underclassmen.

  • There is an influx of youthful, talented wrestlers coming into the program.
  • 4 district finalists return to the lineup with another year of experience under their belts.
  • The 2005 schedule is tough and demanding, and will infuse the Hawks with big match experience before the state championship tournament series.
  • The Hawks have a veteran, stable coaching staff that has guided the program through tougher times than this.
  • The off season program is vigorous, enhancing the experience and skill of wrestlers before the season even starts.

Coach Hill says “This team has a nice blend of youth and experience. I am very pleased with the work ethic of this team and expect the Hawks to reemerge as one of the top programs in the state”.

Lightweights:

Senior Alan Kwong will provide leadership for what has the potential of being a very strong group of lightweights. Kwong is a returning regional placefinisher at 103 lbs and should be the favorite to capture postseason honors at 103 lbs. 112 pounds will be manned by one of two freshman, both of whom have outstanding credentials, work habits, and talent. Ronnie ours and Lewen Romero look to have the ability to come in and immediately contribute to the program. Either could also move up to 119 lbs. Junior Josh Claassen, and Seniors Mike Muenster and Chris McIntosh will battle for a slot at either 125 or 130, this portion of the lineup needs upgrading dramatically for the MatHawks to seriously contend for region and state hard wear. Incoming freshman Shane Schumack could contend for a regional crown if he can get down to 130.

Middleweights:

Jonahan Romero has worked hard to improve his technique and strength in the off season. He has the ability to be a state finalist. He must provide much needed leadership to the team. Romero will probably man the 135 pound class. 140 and 145 pounds has the mix of junior Ryan Barrington and senior Cory Monaghan returning. Both wrestlers weigh in under 145 lbs. and both wrestlers are regional placefinishers. (4 th and 5 th respectively). 152 pounds looks to be were sophomore Steven Ours will start. Ours should contend for regional and state championships this season. He has improved tremendously upon a strong freshman campaign that saw him win over 30 matches and place in the region tourney (5 th).

Heavyweights:

160 and 171 pounds are full of competition. Juniors Zach Grimsley, Robert DeSano, and Yousef Durranni with sophomore Daniel Mills, gives the Hawks a great group of experience wrestlers to pull from throughout the season. Add super frosh Billy Kane to the mix, and you have the makings of championship level competition within the room. Whomever fills the spots in the lineup will ultimately be one of the better wrestlers in the region. Calvin Cardillo will contend for a state crown at 189 lbs. Cardillo comes in off an exhausting off-season campaign which saw him compete in several national level tournaments. Junior Stephen Ayers, a very talented athlete, and Junior Daniel Rogers give the Hawks depth in this weight class. It is likely that either will man the 215 lb weight class. Once again, Hayfield will have to scour the football gridiron to find an athlete to man the heavyweight position.
