Spring Wrestling Makes Winter Champions

The level of preparation for the upcoming season is very underwhelming:

Wrestling club has averaged over 50 people per session; only 6 Hayfield wrestlers attend regularly.

At this point last year, Calvin Cardillo had wrestled in the district MAWA tourney, the regional MAWA tourney, Junior Nationals.  We have 4 returning junior starters who have not competed in 1 event, but have been on several vacations.

If you look at the brag sheet of our returning wrestlers, the brevity of their accomplishments speaks volumes (compare to last years’ roster sheet).  There is no substitute for hard work!

Opportunities for improvement:

  1. Wrestling Club is still going strong every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30-8pm averaging over 50 wrestlers from all over the metro area.
  2. Wrestlers and coaches lift every day from 2:30-3:30 in the weight room (before the football team comes in).  We only average 3 wrestlers a day!
  3. Competitions are a necessity.  The Junior state tourney is only 4 weeks away!  The Cadet tourney is only 2 weeks away!  Good programs expect their wrestlers to get upwards of 50 matches in during the “offseason”.  St. Edwards expects 100 matches per wrestler.  We try and compete at that level with kids who average 10 matches at best.  The Gunston WC arranges travel to and from tourneys every weekend.  All you have to do is get up to the school!  The club schedule is posted in the wrestling room, and is on line at the club web site http://members.cox.net/gunstonwc/schedule.htm  There is no more room for excuses!
  4. Wrestling camps and clinics are great opportunities to improve technique and gain proficiency and confidence.  Hayfield is facilitating the following:
    1. June 2,3, and 4th hosting a mini camp with Mark Disolvo and Central Michigan University.  Mark is a 2x NCAA All-American.  Cost will be $75.
    2. Granby Wrestling Camp is June 25-29th.
    3. Dubuque Team Dual Camp June 28-July 1and national Midwest folkstyle firecracker tourney on July 2nd.
    4. Penn State Camp at West Springfield Aug 6-11, intensive style camp for $100.
